Comparing B2B marketplaces for small Indian sellers

Short answer: IndiaMART is by far the largest Indian B2B marketplace, with the widest range of suppliers and categories. It earns mainly from seller subscriptions and paid buyer-lead packages. TradeIndia is a similar listing-and-leads marketplace. Reseller Bazzar is much smaller and focused on small manufacturers, wholesalers and resellers: listing is free, there is no commission on deals, and optional plans cost ₹499 to ₹3,999 a month. Udaan and Meesho are different kinds of businesses: they sell through their own apps with their own checkout.

How buyer enquiries reach sellers

This is where these platforms differ most in practice, so it's worth understanding before you pay for any plan.

IndiaMART

Buyers can contact a supplier from a listing. IndiaMART also collects buyer requirements, filters them and offers them to suppliers as BuyLeads. A supplier spends a BuyLead to see the buyer's contact details. Paid plans come with a weekly BuyLead allowance, and extra BuyLead packages can be bought. IndiaMART's help pages state that several suppliers can buy the same BuyLead, so expect to compete with other suppliers for those buyers.

TradeIndia

TradeIndia also combines listings with buy leads, and paid membership unlocks contacting buyers and trade alerts. It publishes less detail about how many sellers receive the same lead, so ask their sales team before you buy.

Reseller Bazzar

There are two routes:

  • From a listing: a buyer who contacts you from your product or business page by enquiry, chat or call is talking to you directly.
  • Posted requirements: when a buyer posts a requirement, it is sent to several matching sellers in that category and location, the same idea as a BuyLead. Expect competition on these too.

Paid plans mainly raise the number of these requirement leads you can receive each month and improve your visibility. See current plans.

Udaan and Meesho are different models

  • Udaan is an e-B2B platform for small business owners such as kirana and retail shops: they order through Udaan, and it offers business credit. You buy from Udaan's platform rather than finding a supplier and dealing with them directly.
  • Meesho sells to end customers through its own app. Suppliers list products there, Meesho handles checkout and delivery, and since 2021 it has charged suppliers 0% commission, with other charges such as shipping and ads.

If you want a platform to handle orders and payments for you, these models may suit you better. If you want to find suppliers or buyers and deal directly, a listing marketplace fits better.

Which one should you choose?

If you are…ConsiderWhy
A large manufacturer or exporter wanting maximum reach across many categoriesIndiaMARTThe largest buyer base and supplier directory in India
A small wholesaler or manufacturer on a tight budget, especially in fashionReseller Bazzar (free listing first)Free listing, no commission, low-cost plans if you want more leads
A reseller or boutique looking for suppliersAny listing marketplace, used togetherBuyers pay nothing on any of these, so compare suppliers across platforms

A supplier wanting to sell to consumers without handling orders yourselfMeeshoThe app handles customers, checkout and delivery

Many sellers use more than one platform. A free listing costs only your time, so you can test where your buyers actually come from before paying for any plan.

Questions to ask before paying for any B2B plan

  • How many leads do I get per week or month, and do unused leads expire?
  • How many other sellers receive the same lead?
  • Are leads filtered by my category and city or state?
  • Is there any commission or fee on deals I close?
  • What exactly does the badge or "trust" label on my profile mean to buyers?
  • Can I cancel, and is any part refunded?
